There was no change of planes in Hawaii, the stop was not even noted in the emails you get for the electronic ticket, just Sydney - Vancouver: 17 hours flight. When in transit at other international airports you don't have to "immigrate". You live and you learn. I even tried to ask the woman in charge of the check-in if it was possible to speak to the cabin crew so they'd allowed me to stay on the plane when in Hawaii. I didn't really expect them to go along with this solution, and they didn't. According to my travel agent I have good arguments for receiving a refund, we'll get a decision on that in some weeks.
