I both hope and perceive the die switch as being inadvertent. I think both players should have known the die was originally a six but Pan couldn't figure out what was wrong with the position, he just knew "something" was wrong when he tried to find the original position. If the ref told him to put the checkers back to the original position and to play a 53 well ... and the opponent didn't seem to object, play on and blame the opponent I guess. I've seen a die wrong before even looking at it for such an extensive time only to look down before I pick up my dice and be surprised and give the "Oh shit, did I really roll a 64??" (ask Mary, she'll tell you) It's possible he thought he saw it wrong originally ...
