Taste of beers (OT)

Do you Brits prefer "bitter" ales/beers more than the average westerners? Is India Pale Ale ("IPA") more or less bitter than your favorites? Personally I don't like too much bitter. E.g. Bass Ale is one of my favorites, particularly if on draft. (Best I ever had was on Long Island where I swear they had just taken it off a fast boat from England. :) I assume Bass has considerably lower bitter content than typical. Is that true?

An example of a US microbrew with too much bitter (for my taste) is Red Hook from Washington State. I've even shied away from Sam Adam's lager. If I get a bitter I like to cut it 50-50 with a mild beer (call it the poor man's "black and tan". :)
