Beer for Madison?

Finally a discussion here about something I really know about.
Historically IPA tended to be higher in alcohol and hopping level then Bitter. It was brewed that way in order to increase its shelf life ( hops act as a preservative ) for the trip to India. I'm not sure if they are still stronger in England these days but many American IPAs push 7% ABV these days (and then there are Imperial IPAs which often make it up to 10% ABV).
