I drove from Midway to Madison last year and hated every minute of it. The Illinois Tollway stopped in huge traffic jams every time we approached a tollbooth. Hopefully much of the construction that was going on has been finished over the last year.

Just want to give you hope! I honestly don't know of alternate route, but in general, it's REALLY hard to save time by avoiding freeways on a long trip. I'd just bite the bullet and take the tollway.
