The positions in this thread all have Blue making an inner board point with his opening roll, and his opponent splitting to the 4pt or 5pt on his turn. On the third roll, Blue faces a choice of hitting once and bringing a builder down, or hitting twice and leaving a blot on the 1pt. Owning the 4pt or 5pt gives Blue better priming chances than owning the 2pt or 3pt. When Blue owns the 4pt or 5pt, it is better to hit once.

Owning the 2pt gives Blue much a weaker priming game, so hitting twice dominates hitting once and building. The tipping point comes when Blue owns the 3pt. By the Ballard/Weaver Error Scale, its your choice. Hitting once is tied with hitting twice.

There is a common backgammon maxim that is not supported by these results. That rule says to hit twice after your opponent makes a minor split to the 2pt or 3pt, and to hit just once when he makes a major split to the 4pt or 5pt. In the examples here, the opponent has made a major split, yet sometimes it is correct to hit twice. 31P-43S-32 [H X24 K70] "<=5 (aka 31P-43Z-32)
