I had some U estimates in XG.

As you say, in the third roll position it is routine to split. I had some rough XG estimates the run was only a .02 error THOUGH.

In the middlegame position with his 11 checkers in the zone and stripped mid and our THREATENING 4 prime, splitting would ACTIVATE his barpoint for point making on the splitter's head and the whole heap of wood for unloading. He would very often hit loose against the threats of our builders (present and future). With my threshold of .05 for blunder, XG estimated splitting a blunder.

Granted splitting gives us more gammons, but in the middlegame position splitting just gives him too much counter initiative. Only in a GG situation it would be a hairsplit between go.
