The problem is 4s. While you are waiting to clear the 6pt, it is the number that cannot be played from there. In the meantime, any 4 you roll must be played either from the 5pt or the 4pt.

Right now, you’re in pretty good shape. You have two spares to play from the 5pt while you are waiting to clear four checkers from the 6pt. But things could get tight in a hurry if you played something like 5/off. Then there would only be one spare left on the 5pt.

That leaves two reasonable candidates. Clearing the 4pt now creates a gap, but leaves a position that is 100% safe on the next roll. Playing 6/1 avoids the gap, but at the cost of a blot should you roll 63 on the next roll. Of course, if you blot (1 time in 18), White still must hit (11 times in 36), and then win the game after that (?).

Without any reward for winning a gammon, I am inclined to avoid the gap. It is probably very close.

6/1

Mike
