In Response To: Taking a principled stand on clocks (STEVE HAST)
Steve, you describe yourself as a clock holdout, and that is true. Among your ABT tournament directing peers, I believe there are only three others who have not switched to having clocks required or clock preference in their Open and Masters flights.
In your absence from directing the Pittsburg tournament, clocks were used, I believe, in 2010 and 2011. Both tournaments were favorably reviewed.
I suspect that if you polled participants in those tournaments, you would not find the consensus opinion to be that going back to clocks only by mutual consent was a step in the right direction. Indeed, I gather from past discussions that the response to mandatory clock rules in ABT Open and Masters flights has been one-sidedly favorable, and perhaps the most often made suggestion for further improvement has been to require clocks in Doubles events, also.
