The next major revolution in backgammon bots

Are we accepting that backgammon is basically "solved" by the current leading-edge programs, which is why we are looking for additional challenges beyond "solving" the game?

Someday, inevitably, processors will be powerful enough to allow computers to brute-force backgammon (and chess, etc.) from start to finish. Many top players, particularly those who fetishize opening-move rollouts, seem confident that today's bot results are very close to that optimal solution we will have someday. But what is the source of their confidence? Is it just a "feeling" that today's bots have the game figured out, or is it something that can be demonstrated?
