Would it be possible to do a US Championship, with local qualifiers in 128 cities across the nation, one winner each place going to a 128 player cup final in Vegas?

If done with a low entry fee (maximum $10/person), good publicity and some good sponsored prices (eg. flight and entry to World Championships in Monte Carlo like we had here), you should be able to attract some 200-2000 players in each city, maybe getting 100000 entrants in total?

To pull it off, you need a sponsor that fits the glove - we had Carlsberg in Denmark - a perfect match. Everybody knew them, all PR materials were top-notch. All the cafe/bar/club-owners you wanted to reach knew them (and were buying from them), so it was very easy to kick in doors! I think that sponsor/brandname matching was more instrumental than Danes realize, in this tournament being the success it was.

If US could pull something similar off, just in 16 cities, it would easily become the worlds largest backgammon event - making it yet easier to promote.

That is what should feed your ABT in the long run.
