I believe the format for the Danish championship is the brain child of a prominent high rated player in Denmark who shall remain anonymous. This player has a seat in the tournament committee in DBGF, and it's ultimately the tournament committee who decides the format.

Basically, the idea is this: Swiss format in 2 regional qualifiers. The high rated players only play low rated players and vice versa. Byes are awarded if there is an odd number of players. Byes will go to those players with the highest rating who haven't yet got a bye.

4 wins in the swiss and you're through to the finals. 2 losses ans you're out.

The finals are played over 2 days. First day is swiss format. High rated players only play low rated players and vice versa. Byes are awarded to those players with the highest ratings who haven't received a bye earlier in the tournament, including the regional qualifiers.

Day 2 of the finals is played as a cup. The 2 times this format has been tried, the swiss part of the finals has produced 9 players for the cup. Thus 7 players will get their 2nd by and go straight to the quarter finals.

Throughout the tournament a player is entitled to decline getting a bye if he thinks it will be more valuable to get a bye in the later stages of the tournament.

Bottom line: low rated players will receive no byes and only play high rated players. High rated players will only play low rated players and on top of this advantage, the high rated players will receive byes.

For a low rated player to win this event would be a miracle. I hope that the format is abandoned for good as it doesn't provide an even playing ground for all participants.
