Thanks for providing all the details for how the format is in its latest version. It is actually "worse" than I remembered. I played and qualified once when the format was regional qualifiers with 6 rounds of swiss, random distribution of byes and no seeding but fewer seats to qualify for as the reigning champ and the top 31 rated entered the main cup directly. I chose not to play with the new format even without doing any rigorous analysis. Having known that byes were distributed according to rating too, wouldn't have changed my mind!

To me it doesn't matter who designed this, it has to be a board decision to choose a format for the national championship. Simultaneously, the involved people have done immense work for backgammon, so this format is merely a blemish, but one I too hope will be removed.
