Should all tournaments be "open to all" and "fair"?

A. No. "Maybe there are a few tournaments, where you actually prefer and expect to see the best of the best pitted against each other in the final stages." Again quoting Henrik.

Which was why none of the features of the previous format of the DM that Henrik cited in another post bothered me at all -- 64 players invited, 64 qualify in a 1-day qualifier, seeded-by-rating tournament of 128.

If Mr. or Ms. #600 on the rating list thought this made it too hard to win the national championship, I'd say: play all year, win matches, raise your rating, earn a seeded invitation to the tournament.
