Should all tournaments be "open to all" and "fair"?

I hate comparing backgammon to other games or sports but if you're going to do it look at the WSOP main event(s). Nobody is ranked or placed at certain tables to try to ascertain an optimum 'big name' final table. Games with such a brutal amount of short term luck have to be handled differently. I can get beat by anyone in backgammon whereas if you made a Magnus Carlsen or Novak Djokovic play a bunch of amateur/semi pro players it would be a colossal waste of time for everyone involved.
