In Response To: The meaninglessness of backgammon results (David Rockwell)

Faster time controls have been tried in chess. My sense is that it makes the game more attractive to spectators and tournament directors. Players tend to have mixed reactions. On the one hand, the better players still win and the trains run on time. On the other hand, top players end up blundering more often, or playing more conservatively, because of the reduced thinking time. This reduces the richness of the game.

As I'm something of a purist, I don't like faster time controls because I feel they detract from the game. I don't know if I'll ever play in a tournament, but I'm certainly less likely to do so if the time controls are fast.
