In Response To: The meaninglessness of backgammon results (Bob Koca)

Bob Koca asked:

Do you have an idea which time control gives a greater advantage to the better player in chess?

We'll have a better idea of this once FIDE starts maintaining official rating lists for rapid chess and blitz chess about a week from now. Maybe someone who paid attention to blitz chess ratings back when there was a World Blitz Chess Association will be able to give you a more informed answer.

Anyway, as I think you realize, the objection I have to faster time controls is not that they would diminish the skill involved, or the edge that a strong player has over a weak player, but that they would taint the purity of the game. In chess, for example, it's widely recognized that blitz chess is not the same as "real" chess, even though blitz is used for tiebreaks up to the world championship level.
