Just because it's a fair LOTTERY (as to who gets the byes) it doesn't make it fair! Our game blends skill and chance, but there's no need to greatly increase the chance element in a tournament by randomly assigning some players double the tournament equity. Leobueno's desire to remove this is admirable.
Making adjustments to players entry fees for a large field is much less practical of course than for a smaller (weekly) event. With 11 players in a $10 tournament, the byes pay $13.75 of course, and the non-byes half that. It would help if the organiser brought plenty of change, but you can have the first out in each drawn pair win the rounding to the quarter, five cents or even the cent! Alternatively, let the winner of each of the preliminary matches win the rounding.
In the weekly tournament that I play in with friends, I've suggested this method a few times but, every time, one or two regulars refuse, on the basis that they don't want to risk investing any more than they usually do. Sometimes, one or two players - usually the stronger ones - offer to buy the bye(s), and have this accepted. Handy if you're late starting dinner!
