It's a question of semantics really, Jason. Like Casper says, my choice of words may be wrong. Perhaps it would be better to say that it is not JUST that players are randomly accorded double tournament equity as a result of a bye, rather than not fair. But, in the sense that this lottery was part of the conditions of entry of the tournament - which all players accepted - it was ultimately fair (as long as it was a truly random process).

As an analogy, before penalty shoot-outs in soccer, coin tossing/drawing of lots was used to determine the 'winner' in knockout games still drawn after extra time (though sometimes only after a replay/playoff). All teams agreed to this by entering. Does that then make it FAIR that Italy, for example, went through to the 1968 European Championship Final rather than the USSR? (The teams drew after extra time; Italy won the decisive coin toss.)
