Sure, you can't make the best move, if you can't see it. But what is seeing? As in Wolfgang Metzlers "Gesetze des Sehens", also in backgammon, "Gestalt" plays a big role. Pattern recognizing can help a lot. How long would it take, to list all candidates with no clue about the position and its features?
