"Avoid getting deliberately into backgames if gammon losses count, race is hugely important."

I don't know backgammon history at all but would be interested to learn to whom should this concept be attributed to, where and when, before advent of race-biased bots?(Or is the notion that the playing style in the seventies was heavily backgames-oriented somewhat exaggerated?)
