Backgammon is not popular!

Your implication appears to be that adding more skill (with a Goldilocks constraint) will lead to the top players getting more recognition and or more players reaching for the top. Recognition from whom? The same 10,000 (probably generous number) or so people worldwide who currently care about the game at the level they even notice the top names?

Why do people like Woods, McIlroy, Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal get so much recognition (even to the extent of idolization)?

The fact that very few (if any) make a living at backgammon is a result of the same root cause.

If reducing the luck factor brings (a lot) more people into the game then I think you're onto something. But it's interesting that some argue that the increase in skill level (with the introduction of skilled bot tutors) has (net) driven people away.
