$100K guaranteed prize pool every year, entries are ~$230-$250 with re-entry of $100, IMs and GMs sponsored. A few other special rules regarding entry fees which are listed.
Call avg entry $230 and total payout $100K. It looks like total entry fees were close to $170K in 2012, I think you are looking at about 60% return. A similarly interested person could go through previous years or the World Open etc. Chess makes all the numbers available so you could actually go through what the exact numbers were if you were that interested.
Note that the returns in the lower sections are dramatically lower than the returns in the higher ones. For ex. Under 2300 (master/expert) returned about 85%, Under 900 (novice) returned about 13%, and the Open returned about 180%.
Backgammon is indeed not chess.
