A case where I picture mid-game negotiating making sense is when a game neither player expected to become DMP, does so. For example, it was 4a3a when it started, but now the cube is on 4 and both players agree the game is now about even. So they agree to split the prize money, then play out the game and the match normally for the trophy and bragging rights (or maybe just to advance to the next round).

Mid-game negotiations, as long as the game was then played normally, would not be a legal or moral issue to me except for the time they would take if both players don't quickly agree that the game is about even, or at least that it's easily calculable. The prospect of numerous and/or lengthy discussions regarding equitable hedges might be enough to make outlawing mid-game negotiations the right course for the overall good of the tournament.
