I expect that there are other examples of the opposite kind, as you suggest. Anyway, I don't think that Nack's point depends sensitively on the exact type of error. As long as XG 3-ply's error rate is slightly elevated when the opponent has a somewhat weird-looking blotty board, then it's going to think that the weird blotty board isn't as bad as it actually is.
