It seems clear to me that mochy had decided that since his opponent had only 3 seconds (versus mochy's 10 seconds) left, going for a long game was easily worth giving up the early game equity from the slottings. If Loero had had, say, 23 seconds and mochy 30 seconds, I doubt he would have done the 61 slot, since Loero would have had a much better chance to avoid timing out. What made it an even clearer decision was that up till the last game or two, Loero seemed to be playing rather slowly from a physical point of view, making it even more likely that he didn't have such a good "speedgammon" mode.
