The Danes have had fantastic leadership since the late 1980s initially under the visionary leadership of Chris Ternel and Erik Gravgaard and by subsequent strong and determined leadership ever since. Almost from the start, they secured fantastic sponsorship deals, which helped promote a grass roots café culture for backgammon which raised the profile of backgammon throughout the country. Subsequently they developed a National Elo Rating System which is the exemplar model for the rest of the World (the Japanese Backgammon League adopted the system with minor modification). They also developed the Nordic Open into one of the most prestigious tournaments in the World. Within the last 10 years they developed a Norms based title system (including titles SGM, GM and IM) which considerably raised the profile of backgammon to potential players, the general public and potential sponsors. Denmark has been ahead of the game with their visionary and innovatory approach, and strong and effective leadership for the last 25-30 years. Hitherto, other countries have followed in their wake, though many are catching up.
Since the mid-90s, slightly predating the release of the commercial bots, Denmark has demonstrated a very high level of achievement amongst its flock of young players, which has been backed up with remarkable strength in depth. The overall strength of the Danes has been very well demonstrated by the Denmark vs the World event held annually at the Nordic Open each year.
Danish Backgammon has been a massive success story engineered by visionary leadership and brilliant management, which has enabled such a small country to rival and in most cases surpass any other country in the World.
