In Response To: Calculation (Casper Van der Tak)

Casper Van der Tak: I think if you go back to the question whether it is theoretically possible to calculate the equity of the initial backgammon position for the player on roll, then it is important whether the undefined equity position can be reached legally AND with BEST play throughout. If not, the equity of the starting position does not depend on this undefined equity position.

I think any position which leads to an undefined equity position (UEP) must also be undefined, regardless of whether it is the so-called best play or not. For example, if you take the preceding position and go through all the ways to play the given roll, one of those ways will lead to the UEP. Now you must compare a bunch of (presumably) defined equities against one undefined equity. How can you say which is better?
