In a recent email discussion, David Presser has been trying to convince me that (roughly speaking), 11 checkers in the zone is what you need to make a committal blitzing play in the early game. "Committal" here means that the move significantly reduces your ability to carry out other game plans. This seems like a reasonable rule of thumb and could be an example of using the concept of commitment.
Interestingly, though, David didn't use the concept of commitment when formulating the rule, and I was the one to suggest using the word "committal," even though, as I stated previously, I rarely use the concept of commitment in my own thinking.
