The issue is new because in the context of a 5,000-year-old-game, the technology is new. I've had opponents use headphones/earbuds, and raised no objection. Though to be truthful, I don't think it helps the game in the abstract.

In some ways I welcome it, because it frees me to check my e-mail if I need to.

Although I think it could be used for cheating -- would you allow it if you were playing for a million dollars against someone no one knows? -- nothing can be done unless we are willing to ban hearing aids.

My advice is to not let it proactively affect your tournament attendance. You probably won't encounter a player who objects, and if he or she does, then you get to treat them poorly in return. If you happen to run into someone who objects, then it's just one match.

As to all the new rules, the USBGF is promising to be more democratic about it.
