If you need to open a position to practice pip counting or to contemplate the best move etc. without the benefit of pips on the screen then I would try GnuBG in support of XG.

I normally run Gnu alongside XG. You can preset the pips to off. Then copy & paste the XGID into Gnu (ctrl + C then ctrl + V) and it's done.

Ruminate at your leisure and then refer to XG in the case of position evaluation. If this is what you require and have any questions then give me a shout.
