I follow your logic, but I think you have it reversed. The 6 was good for Alan and he would gain by batting the other die onto the board, not that he would ever do such a thing. That is the problem with the rule, the way it stands one could bat a die back if it favored them to do so and let a die go if that favored them. I think Rich Munitz plans to address this issue in a future rules supplement.

It is tricky no matter how it is worded.
