"A standard elimination playoff is undesirable because the late bye awards a very large equity bump to one player at the expense of the others."
Suppose that tournament X has a field of 48 and has 3 groups of 16 leading to the three way tie situation. Suppose that tournament Y also has a field of 48 but instead uses a grid of 64 with 16 byes in the bottom half (which I believe is the more common situation).
At some point there will be 3 players in both tournaments who are 4 - 0. In tournament X having a bye at that point is undesirable Is it also undesirable that in tournament Y that one player at 4- 0 has twice the equity of the other two 4-0 players?
