Clearly, you always want an outright winner to award a trophy to, but how important is it that 2nd and 3rd places are also resolved? If it wasn't considered essential then the mean number of round robin matches drops from 4 to 7/3, I believe. This is so if the winner of the first match is required to play in the second. Of course, both calculations assume that the players are of an exactly equal standard, which is surely never the case. Therefore, in practice these numbers are reduced.

In round robins, would it also not be reasonable after a 3 way tie to reduce the length and/or TC of the subsequent matches?
