New standard method for resolving 3-way ties on the ABT

The format that has been decided upon by the USBGF to decide 3 player finishes in ABT events is original and very neat. But it has also been described as weird; perhaps a little unnatural might be a fairer description.
A round robin is the natural way to decide a 3 player contest. Yes, it will take slightly longer on the average: a little less than a third of a match longer if 2nd and 3rd places are not required to be resolved (though they still often will be). The variance is also much greater. But if any subsequent 2 or 3 match sets that may be needed are, as I suggested, shorter and/or with faster TC, then this variance could be greatly reduced.
The system adopted seems to me better suited as a kind of Armageddon tiebreaker in the unlikely event that round robins keep failing to produce a winner, and time is running short; potentially comprising only 1 point matches.
