I think I may have found the trigger for the spike in Google searches for 'backgammon' on the 22nd Jun 2018

I performed a standard search entitled 'June 2018 backgammon event'.

The 5th hit from www.google.co.uk was entitled..

"Our Next ABT Event--> LOS ANGELES OPEN, June 2018 (+links to ..."

and it was for the

"LOS ANGELES OPEN June 22-24, 2018"

Although this just could be a coincidence, I very much doubt that it is.

IMO, this surge in interest for this event on this date meant that other, less exciting backgammon days (relatively) paled into insignificance according to Google's algorithm.
