Yes - in Trends analyzing by topic (game) instead of the explicit term 'backgammon' does indeed give different results.

If you yourself were to perform this type of exercise, which variables/switches would you prefer to use to gather and present the data? And why?

According to the helpful article in my link below, searching by topic is a 'beta' feature. Personally I found its output a little puzzling.. I lived in Oman (where backgammon is ranked 13th most popular region by 'Topic') for 9 months and visited many hotels and cafes. In that time, apart from myself and my expat bg tutor, I did not see another person playing backgammon? Perhaps it is actually haram in some regions. Or maybe only played behind closed doors..
