"If you yourself were to perform this type of exercise, which variables/switches would you prefer to use to gather and present the data? And why?"

If you mean using google trends then I would first need to understand exactly how it works. For example is the difference between what happens with backgammon (game) and backgammon (search term) explained anywhere?
