I would love to see ratings revived.

In Chess and Othello, the rating system is a huge part of the attraction of tournaments. Players love ratings. I have never known of an example of a weak player staying away to avoid a rating. There is one exception to that. I have seen players who have been inactive for a long time such as five or ten years refrain from playing again because they knew their rating would decline. I expect this would not be a problem in backgammon since the chance element in the game means that ratings always have the potential to go in either direction.
