I wouldn't mind seeing weekly events rated. First, you need a certain volume of data for your ratings to be meaningful, even if it's not all going to be data of the highest quality. Second, ratings are a draw in chess and I don't see why they wouldn't be a draw in backgammon. People like to improve their rating and are more likely to play in an event if it's rated.

That said, most weekly tournaments are 5 or 7 pointers and I don't know that we are talking about rating matches of those lengths. However, I don't find the "people don't try as hard in weekly tournaments" argument particularly compelling.
