ABT Point System Insight

Many of us have wanted to see the point system in the ABT changed to give players points for every win, not just for cashing. And we believe, like bridge, Chess, and other systems, there should be some kind of rating or points that stay with you and rate you (based on w/l etc.)

We believe this would more accurately and fairly reflect each player's abilities than just points for cashing, and we believe it would encourage more people to play and maintain an interest. wins and losses and participation and to encourage more interest in the game and encourage growth and greater participation. It would also allow for greater flexibility in tournament formats.

One of the reasons the leadership and many players resist the change is simply because most people resist change of any kind, but also they don't want to see the many years of history of the current point system wiped out. ("Nobody likes change but a wet baby.")

I remind you to take a look at what professional football and baseball have done. After many, many years of history and tremendous interest in player statistics, they both made many changes to make the game more interesting and popular (inter-league play, more games every year, playoffs, designated hitter).

You can imagine the resistance, particularly in baseball, to making any of these changes from their great, long history. You cannot compare a modern pitcher or hitter with those of yesteryear now that there is a DH and now that there are many more games every year. But you make change if it makes the game better…if it increases participation and interest.

It's time to make those changes.
