Date: Monday, 6 July 2009, at 9:45 a.m.

We are now taking pre-registrations for the coveted WSOB Nations Cup to be held in Cannes which begins on July 21st at 9pm at the Palm Beach Casino, Cannes

Previous Winners:

2008 - Gernany : Götz Hildsberg / Jan Jacobowitz / Christian Plenz 2007 - Denmark : Morten Holm / Sander Lylloff 2006 - USA : Perry Gartner / Ray Fogerlund / Howard Markowitz 2005 - Israel : Gadi Carmeli / Abraham Eitan / Falafel 2004 - Mexico : Malcolm Davis / Jose Farca

1) The deadline for team registration is July 15th 2009. Late entries may be awarded to teams fielding teams from nations not yet entered by July 21st.

2) Applications must include country name; 2 - 4 players completed names; address, email and phone number for each player.

3) If more than 24 countries (plus the 8 seeded countries) apply to participate to the Nations Cup, 24 countries will be drawn on July 15th 2006.

4) Teams may send an email to ab@worldseriesofbackgammon.com to nominate their team

5) Registered teams will be announced on www.wordlseriesofbackgammon.com and here on BGonline Forums on July 15th

If more than one team applies from the same country, before the registration deadline, the committee will act as follows:

1) As the Nations Cup is not an open tournament, the committee will dismiss any team that would be considered not strong enough to support its country’s interest. In doing so, the committee will not have to justify its decision.

2) If however, several teams of international level remain after the first selection, the committee will proceed to a consultation with those teams. The captain of each team will then be offered to consult with other captains, in a view of deciding which team should play. A play-off match is a possible alternative.

The Nations Cup gathers 32 countries each presenting one team only, of 2 players, plus 1 substitute player (strongly recommended). Each playing team must also elect a player (the captain).

These 32 teams divide into 8 groups (from group A to group H) of 4 teams each.

The 4 teams of each group play each other in a ‘round robin’, thus each team plays a match against the other three.

Only one team per group qualifies to the Nations Cup Quarter-Finals.

FORMAT

The procedure to qualify to the Nations Cup Quarter-Finals follows:

1) If a team wins all 3 matches, it qualifies directly to the Nations Cup quarter-finals.

2) In the case of a tie ie 2 wins and 1 loss, the team that has lost the least sets wins and qualifies to the Nations Cup quarter-finals.

3) In the case of a perfect tie between two teams (wins, loss, and lost sets), they play a 7 point double consultation match on the clock.

NOTE : If fewer than 32 teams enter the competition, the comitee may amend the format.

MATCH FORMAT: 2 singles and 1 double consultation decider

The Nations Cup is played as best of 3 sets:

Entry per team €900 + 100

Payout 1st: 50% - 2nd: 25% -3rd: 15% - 4rth: 10%
