MN Main - my error

After losing to John O'Hagan in the 2nd round of the Masters, I was rewarded with a 2nd chance in the first round of the main today. It is always a pleasure to play John for multiple reasons. I think what I like the best is watching him play the opening.

In the position below, I have escaped a potential backgammon for the match and a gammon that would have put me back -8 -1C. And I can actually start thinking about trying to win the game. I mis-played this position. Why is the correct play better than the inferior play? (I haven't figured it out yet.)

The score (after 0 games) is: O'Hagan 6, Rockwell 3 (match to 11 points)

Move number 6: Rockwell to play 52
