Ultimate Backgammon Quiz and Lesson

I would love to hear feedback on this idea for a tournament side event.

The Ultimate Backgammon Quiz and Lesson

Picture this: the room is full of people each with a piece of paper to fill in their plays. The plays are numbered.

The leader calls out the opening roll, everyone writes down their play. The play is entered into the computer program which is projected on to a large screen, and the play that the leader has already chosen to make is entered.

The leader then calls out the next roll. (The game has already been pre-recorded and the rolls have been selected in advance by the leader to be interesting and challenging. The entire match will have been rolled out for scoring accuracy.)

Whenever the leader thinks there is a possibility of cube action, he will ask the participants to enter that answer as well.

This is done for a 3 point match. The answer sheets are collected, and they are scored.

As for scoring, we could either adjust using standard ER and ELO's, or we could use a scoring system just for this, as follows:

everyone starts with 100 points, and you lose 1 point for every error over .03; 2 points for every error over .05, and 3 points for every error over .08.

While the answer sheets are being scored, the moderator goes over the match on the screen and the proper plays and cube actions are discussed.

There is a $20 entry fee, with half of the money going to the leader for his work and for his discussion of the plays, and the balance given as prize money to the top two scores. Only the top 2 scores would be announced…everyone else will get their scored sheets back privately, so no one will be embarrassed about their scores. Everyone will also get a copy of the right moves so they can study their mistakes. (We might have a separate prize for intermediate players so they are not in direct competition with Open players.)

I, for one, would love to take part in this as a learning experience and to see how the great players fare.

Your comments and suggestions are most appreciated.

Phil
