OCR Software for Video to GNU Conversion

Back a couple of months someone posted that it would be nice to have some Clever OCR software to read recorded matches (video) and create an output file into GNU / Snowie.

A friend of mine at work has looked into this and has a plan to make it happen.

Before he goes forward...

Has anyone done this already? Would this still be desirable? Would people be willing to pay for such software?
