New iPhone backgammon app

Hi everyone,

I'd like to announce the release of a new backgammon game for the iPhone/iPod touch, called Backgammon NJ. It features a strong AI that should provide a challenging opponent for you wherever you go.

When I first got my iPhone, I was dismayed by the selection of backgammon programs available on that platform. Most of the computer AIs played poorly, and some went so far as to cheat by manipulating the dice. I set out to create a backgammon program that would play at the level of desktop programs. The result is Backgammon NJ. It contains many of the evaluation features that you are already familiar with if you use GNU or Snowie:

  • Neural net evaluator
  • Doubling cube evaluation using Janowski's formulae
  • Bearoff database
  • Match equity table

Since it was made for a mobile platform, it only uses static evaluations (no lookahead), so it plays roughly on the same order as GNU 0-ply or Snowie 1-ply.
