Old story, but maybe worth repeating

I recall learning in a Group Theory math course in College that if you can do 13 perfect cuts and riffed shuffles of a deck, you will wind up with the identical deck that you started with. It is also my understanding that there are magicians who are capable of this.
Perhaps that is why 7 (the midpoint between 0 and 13) is the magic number for randomness. And perhaps "random" is not necessarily random either, but just "most different from the original deck".
