I must be playing it wrong. I understand that 24/21 is superior to 24/23, but my approach to these positions is to split as quickly as possible to try to get an anchor and not get hemmed in behind a growing prime on the ace. In a lot of early positions with the 6-7-8 structure, White hasn't yet brought another builder down from the mid. It seems like the more builders White brings down, the more cautious Blue should be about trying to major split. So I usually split with almost any ace or deuce, except in cases like this where I have a 3 to go along with it.

Don't know if I can decide between 24/21 8/7, 24/23 6/3*, and 8/7 6/3*, but maybe if a tiebreak is necessary..
