Your analysis of $ looks excellent to me.

I recently joined a cult in which we must think about the race whenever we consider volunteering a shot. So, I would lean to D (13-7, 13-11) leaving the mid-point shot in this position with the actual 5 pip deficit. I would start leaning towards I (13-5) if the race was more favorable by 5 to 10 pips. (e.g. moving the extra white spares around.) With better racing chances, I don't want to volunteer.
