Your opponent called the flop, which could mean that he's on a draw, he has an Ace or small pair which he suspects might be good, or he has top pair or better and is waiting to raise you on the turn.
I would check here and call a bet. The problem when we bet here is that we have to call a raise but it's no bargain. Checking loses a bet when opponent is on a flush draw, but only if opponent would check after us. Many opponents would bet the turn if we checked with a flush draw, hoping to pick up the pot.
Only against a maniac betting out could be correct because against such a player you are not unhappy if he raises you.
